Archetypal psychology is a theoretical development of C. G. Jung’s analytical psychology and a critical approach to modern psychology as a whole. Among the criticisms made by its founder James Hillman, this article will highlight the replacement of a reductionist and literal perspective of the psychological phenomenon with a phenomenological perspective. This article aims to investigate the presence of Husserl’s phenomenological method in Hillman’s work, from its application in his thesis Emotion (1959), in which he adopts the Husserlian method of the epoché, to the publication of his magnum opus, Re-Visioning Psychology (1975), where the act of “psychologizing” is close to phenomenology, since both seek to understand the “essence” of phenomena. In summary, the phenomenological method is evident in the work with dream images, in which Archetypal Psychology remains faithful to the phenomenon, circulating around the image itself in order to grasp its archetypal background.
