This paper examines Jung’s dream theory, focusing on the book Dream Analysis: Notes of the Seminar Given in 1928-1930 by C. G. Jung. Unlike the Freudian approach, which interprets dreams as wish fulfillments of repressed desires, Jung proposes a symbolic and teleological understanding, viewing dreams as autonomous productions of the unconscious that reveal contents from both the personal and collective unconscious. Through the discussion of a patient’s dreams, Jung elucidates his interpretive method, based on symbolic listening and on the compensatory and prospective functions of dreams. This article also highlights the formative and ethical value of the seminars, in which Jung appears not only as a theorist but also as an analyst and facilitator of the dialogue with the unconscious. The vivid and dialogical nature of these transcriptions allows the reader not only to access core concepts of Analytical Psychology, but also to experience the analytical attitude involved in working with dreams. Revisiting this work reaffirms the clinical relevance of symbolic listening and the role of dreams as a regulative and creative feature of the psyche.
